Garrison echoes the opinions of many others when he writes that Haller (1708-1777) was "the master physiologist of his time... To read Prof. Kroenecker's Haller redivivus is to see how many apparently "new" discoveries of modern observers had already been accounted for by this great master." According to Castiglione (p. 611), Haller's most important work was on the physiology of the blood vessels and of the nervous system, a subject to which the present volume makes an important contribution. This work on the circulation of the blood is divided into two parts, the first containing deductions which are based upon the protocols of the observations collected in the second part. His conclusion, that the capillaries are without contractility, became a foundation of medical science and practice for nearly two centuries. Extremely rare.
