The Balfour Declaration, issued on November 2, 1917, was a landmark statement by the British government expressing support for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine, then part of the Ottoman Empire. Issued in a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lord Walter Rothschild, a prominent leader of Britain's Jewish community, the declaration represented a major diplomatic achievement for the Zionist movement, particularly through the efforts of Chaim Weizmann, who would later become Israel's first president.
