Gymnocrex Plumbeiventris

London: Henry Sotheran & Co., 1888.

Print. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Sheet measures 14 1/8" x 19 1/2".

The Gymnocrex plumbeiventris, also known as the grey-bellied rail, is a waterbird native to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. This print features a true-to-size adult Gymnocrex plumbeiventris in the foreground, with two additional birds of the species in the background. The landscape reflects the tropical environment the species can be found in. This print is plate 71 in the fifth and final volume of John Gould's 'The Birds of New Guinea and the Adjacent Papuan Islands,' which was published between 1875 and 1888. Gould sketched more than 300 illustrations for the project, and each image is accompanied by descriptive text. This print was lithographed by William Hart and printed by the Mintern Brothers. The print is in very good condition, with minor tears and chips at the margin. Tape residue on two sheet edges, not affecting the image.

John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist and illustrator. Over the course of his lifetime, Gould produced more than 40 folio volumes and illustrated more than 3,000 colored plates.
