Item #338691 Africa. A. K JOHNSTON.

Africa

Edinburgh: Johnston, A.K., 1857.

Map. Engraving with original hand colored outline Image measures 24" x 19.25".

Fantastically detailed map of Africa. Coastlines are extensively detailed, with the central interior noted as "Unexplored." Cities, rivers, topography, and regions are labeled. Relief is shown by hachure. Hand colored outline delineates the outer coastline, indicating regional divisions, with only the Cape Colony in the south and surrounding regions fully outlined. Unlike later editions published by W. and A.K. Johnston, this map is remarkably devoid of inland detail, with major features such as Lake Victoria missing entirely. As European interest in the continent intensifies through the latter half of the 19th century, geographic knowledge becomes more detailed. In very good condition, with some minor scattered foxing.

A.K. Johnston (1804-1871) was a Scottish geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Partnered with his brother William, Johnston maintained a prolific map publishing firm throughout the 19th century. Their output ranged from globes, to atlas and wall maps.
