Vintage fold-out mid-century transit map of the New York City subway and elevated rail system, published by the Hagstrom Company in November, 1949. This edition captures a transitional moment in NYC transit history, showing the system still divided into the IRT, BMT, and IND lines, prior to the full system unification in the 1960s. Several remaining Els, or elevated railines, are still visible on this map - including the 3rd Ave El in Manhattan, prior to demolition in the 1950s. Sponsored by the Brooklyn and Queens YMCA, the map lists 10 branches, with addresses and phone numbers on verso.
The maps striking period design includes a clear delineation of subway divisions, major landmarks, and ferry routes. It also features a transfer legend, wtih free transfer points notated throughout the map. Printed in color on durable paper stock, it folds down neatly for portability. An excellent example of NYC transit history, desirable for collectors of transportation memorabilia, vintage cartography, or New York ephemera.
