This vibrant double-sided map was distributed for the 1964/1965 World's Fair in Queens, New York. It features a detailed pictorial map of the fair grounds, created by Hermann Bollmann for Time magazine. The map is extensively labeled with charming illustrations of the pavilions, the Unisphere, fountains, transportation centers, Shea Stadium, and more. On the verso is a map titled "The Approaches to the Fair" depicting Manhattan, Queens, and parts of Brooklyn and the Bronx. The map highlights the street grid, with parks colored in green and surrounding water in blue. Transportation lines via the Long Island R.R., and the BMT, IND, and IRT subway lines are highlighted in red. An inset near the lower margin shows the World's Fair Area in detail. In very good condition. Some pen marks to index of World's Fair map, and minor toning along fold lines of city map. Attached to the original booklet cover, with some wear to covers. Rumsey 8699.001
Hermann Bollmann (1911-1971) was a German cartographer who brought his training as a graphic artist to bear on the German tradition of Vogelschaukarten (bird's-eye-view maps).
