Autographed Letter Signed
1993.
Humorous handwritten letter from Tom Brokaw to Washington Post columnist Tom Shales. Brokaw wrote "Tom - Not to worry. My late night sketch work ended Monday. Besides I've already had a pie in my face. See any number of your earlier columns". Shales, in his September 14, 1993, Washington Post review of the premiere of The Late Night with Conan O'Brien TV wrote about Tom Brokaw's cameo. Shales noted that Brokaw participated by greeting Conan in an elevator and menacingly crushing soda crackers to blow the crumbs into the air. Shales speculated that Brokaw made the cameo to "appease" NBC President Robert C. Wright after Brokaw had previously made a guest appearance on David Letterman's new CBS show. He added that "Brokaw should remember that a man can be too good a sport," suggesting that a pie in the face was the next logical step.
Thomas John Brokaw is an American author and retired network television journalist. In the previous decade he served as a weekend anchor for the program from 1973 to 1976. He is the only person to have hosted all three major NBC News programs: The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and, briefly, Meet the Press. He formerly held a special correspondent post for NBC News.
This is a new item from the collection of Television critic Tom Shales (1944 - 2024). Shales was an incisively funny Washington Post columnist, he earned the nickname Terrible Tom and had the clout to make or break shows. Shales won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1988. During his three-decade career those in the industry considered him both a kingmaker and a high executioner in an era when network television's hold on American culture was at it's peak. Time magazine called him "brilliant, thoughtful, incisive and screamingly funny...also, vicious, infuriating, cruel and unfair". His thrice-weekly Washington Post TV column, 'On the Air,' syndicated in 59 other newspapers. The Tom Shales collection includes letters, cards and correspondence from celebrated television and entertainment legends, newscasters and politicians, including letters from Norman Lear, David Letterman, Johnny Carson, Conan O'Brien, Garry Shandling, Fred Rogers, Carol Burnett, David Brinkley, Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Edward Kennedy, Nancy Reagan and many more.
