Dakota Territory: 1875.
2 pages, Dakota Territory, August, 1875. This document -- a Statement of Forage and Straw -- is signed by Captain John S. Poland ("J.S. Poland"), known for his letter which provided an account of Custer's Last Stand at Little Bighorn and Lt. William Badger who served under Major Marcus Reno during the Battle of Little Bighorn. The document lists the amount of oats, corn, barley, hay, fodder, and straw consumed by the animals at the Standing Rock Reservation in The Dakota Territory. The front cover measures 8.5 x 3.75 inches and folds out to the inner page with lists measuring 16.75 x 11 inches. Natural folds and slight creasing in one spot; near fine condition.
John S. Poland was a career officer in the United States Army. A Union Army veteran of the American Civil War, he also served in the American Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War. Poland attained the rank of brigadier general and was most notable for his command of the 17th Infantry Regiment and 2nd Division, First Army Corps.
William Badger was part of Reno's battalion and he was one one of the officers who fought in the dismounted charge Reno ordered after his initial attack. Badger survived the battle and he later took part in the post-battle investigations and court of inquiry. Binding: Unbound
