Rapid Transit Guide

Brooklyn: New York City Transit Authority, 1969.

New York City transit map and station guide published in 1969 by the New York City Transit Authority. Page unfolded measures 19" x 15.5" and folded 4.75" x 3.25".

Charming pocket guide to New York City's public transport system before it was known as the "Subway". The map was originally published in 1968 by the New York City Transit Authority and revised in 1969. Shows the various Rapid Transit lines, stations, connections, routes, etc.

The New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) was created in 1953 and included the buses, streetcars and the IRT, BMT and IND subways. In 1968, the NYCTA and the MaBSTOA were placed under the control of the MTA, which is today the busiest and largest transit system in North America.

This map, made just a year after the transition, notes all the rapid transit lines. An explanation in the key located in the top right corner notes the lines that were formerly a part of the IRT division and the lines formerly under the BMT and IND divisions, to further assist the commuter in navigating the new system.

Verso of the map includes a detailed guide to each route with stations listed. A list of places to visit with direction is also included. The map is in very good condition with minimal wear along the folds.
