Synthetica: A New Continent of Plastics
New York: Fortune, 1940.
Pictorial map. Color lithograph. Measures 13 7/8" x 22 1/8"
This imaginary map transforms the emerging world of synthetic materials into a geographic frontier. Designed by Orbo Plastic Novelties, Inc., the map depicts a conceptualized continent, loosely represented as a large peninsula, divided into "countries" representing key plastic compounds such as Bakelite, Vinyl, and Cellulose. The peninsula is connected to a land bridge of Natural Resins, such as rubber and wax. Rayon and Nylon exist as islands connected by bridges to nearby coasts. This map appeared in the October 1940 issue of Fortune Magazine. In very good condition, with original centerfold as issued.
