Argonautica

This map, published circa 1650 by Jan Jansson, illustrates the legendary voyage of Jason and the Argonauts in their quest for the Golden Fleece. Centered on the Black Sea and eastern Mediterranean, the map identifies key stops along the expedition, including Lesbos, Chios, and Abydus. Three insets surrounding the map feature Thessaly, homeland of the Argonauts; the Hellespont, a focal point of their journey; and a broader map of Europe tracing the heroes' return route as described in the Orphic Argonautica. The maps include mythological sites such as the island of the Sirens and the place of Prometheus' punishment. An attribution near the lower margin credits the engraving to Petrus Kaerius (Peter van der Keere), who executed the map at the age of 74. In excellent condition.
Jan Jansson was part of an influential family of map publishers from the Netherlands throughout the 17th century and beyond. They were based in Arnhem then in Amsterdam. They were printers, publishers and booksellers. Major publications were under the joint ownership of the Jansson heirs and their printing empire. This is a dark impression of an unusual map.
