London: G. & J. Cary, 1808.
Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 9 1/4" x 11 1/4", London: 1804.
Beautifully colored early 19th century map of Arabia by Cary depicting the region extending from the Nile Delta to the Indian Ocean. Hand colored to delineate regions and provinces, the map notes important cities, rivers, towns, mountains, deserts, and other topographical features throughout. Relief is depicted by hachure. 'Pearl Bank' is noted in the Gulf. The settlement of Groene is noted as Koueit. Caravan routes across the Peninsula between Basra and Mecca and El-Katif and Mecca are noted. Safe drinking wells are noted throughout the map.
John Cary (1754-1835) was a British cartographer and engraver. His highly detailed and accurate maps mark a turning point from the earlier emphasis on decoration toward a greater emphasis on information. This map is a fine example of Cary's work.
