James Wild
London: W.R. Royle and Son Ltd., 1976.
Botanical. Color lithograph. Page measures 23" x 20".
The James Wild is a tall and strong tulip with deep peach petals. Depicting the flower as slightly opened and leaning towards the viewer, this color lithograph showcases the lavish colors of the flower as well as McEwen's luminous attention to the intricacies of each petal. Slight toning around edges, not affecting the image.
Rory McEwen (1932 - 1982) was an artist and musician born in Scotland. He studied at Eton and Trinity College in Cambridge and later settled in London. He began painting flowers when he was eight. He went on to become a musician and performer and a regular on the BBC's 'Tonight' eventually hosting 'Hallabaloo', a folk, blues and alternative music show. From 1964, McEwen shifted focus on his visual art career, developing his distinctive style. His work has been exhibited internationally and is in several museum collections, including the Tate in London. These wonderful Old English Tulip lithographs are rendered with scientific detail combined with a contemporary lightness and flair.
