The Great Bridge - Fire-works and Illumination, from the Brooklyn Side
New York: Harper, 1883.
Print. Woodcut. Page measures 10 7/8" x 15 1/2"
This uncolored engraving was published in June 2, 1983 issue of Harper's Weekly. It depicts the grand display of fireworks and illuminations at the opening of the great suspension bridge between New York and Brooklyn (the Brooklyn Bridge) on the evening of May 24th, 1883. An article titled "The Opening of the Bridge" is included on the verso. In 1870, Brooklyn and New York (Manhattan) were independent cities, and the only travel between them was by ferry. The completion of the Brooklyn Bridge connected the two cities and surely played a role in the eventual unification of the City of New York in 1898. In very good condition.
