Uncolored engraving of an image of the new air-ship "City of New York," from the September 24, 1859 edition of Harper's Weekly. The scene shows the air-ship aloft over water. Two figures are in the gondola, and one is dropping a parcel with a parachute over the side. Multiple flags are displayed on the air-ship below the balloon. Text on verso. In very good condition, with minor chips and tears to margin.
Harper's Weekly was a New York-based illustrated political magazine published from 1857 until 1916. The magazine featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on many subjects, and humor. Its most well-known contributor was Thomas Nast, who made his career doing political cartoons for the publication.
