Preliminary Chart of San Luis Pass

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1853.

Sea chart. Hand colored. Image measures 38.75 x 17.25"

Beautiful hand-colored nautical chart or maritime map depicts the San Luis Pass in 1853, connecting the West Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. Includes Galveston Island, San Luis Island, Mud Island, and Peninsula Point. The chart notes depth soundings throughout to help navigate the waters. Sailing directions and tidal remarks are included in the lower right corner. Tastefully hand colored to show beaches, flood plains, and coast lines. This map shows a fascinating depiction of the area before the pass was closed and the island merged with the adjacent Velasco Peninsula. In very good condition, with minor toning along original fold lines.

This map was issued by the U.S. Coast Survey under the supervision of A. D. Bache, Superintendent. Triangulation by James S. Williams and topography by J.M. Wampler, hydrography under the command of H.S. Stellwagen, Lieutenant U.S. Navy.

Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was an incredibly prolific surveyor, who worked as the superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, which was first established in 1807. Over the course of the 19th century, the survey worked closely with the U.S. Navy to produce sea charts of the country's waters that could serve scientific as well as military functions.
