Colton's Georgetown and the City of Washington the Capital of the United States of America.

New York: J.H. Colton & Co., 1868.

Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 15 1/2" x 18 3/8"

Nice map or city plan of Washington D.C. and Georgetown shows incredible detail of the nation's capital just before the outbreak of the American Civil War. The map extends from Georgetown and Georgetown University to Alexander's Island in the south and Magazine Wharf in the east. Uniontown (now Anacostia) is noted. The famous city grid and ray structure laid down by Pierre Charles L'Enfant and important national landmarks are identified, including the Capitol, the Smithsonian Institution, the White House (called President's House), the National Observatory and several others. In the eastern branch of the Potomac River, we can see the landfill and extensions proposed at the time. Three beautifully engraved views of the Capitol (with the second dome shown complete, while in reality was still under construction at the time of publication), the Smithsonian Institution and the Washington Monument are depicted in three corners.

The map is in good condition with minor toning and some edge wear, not affected printed image.

The Colton family was one the most prolific and successful publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. J.H. Colton (1800-1893) founded his business in NYC in 1831.
