Russian Empire

Edinburgh: Lizars, William, 1833.

Map. Engraving with original hand outline. Sheet measures 23 1/8" x 35"

Highly detailed map of the Russian Empire, with an accompanying Chart of the Communication between the Archipelago and Black Sea. The map of the Russian Empire extends from the Black Sea to the Aleutian Islands, with Eastern European regions extensively divided and labeled. Mountains are depicted pictorially and labeled, along with rivers, cities, and towns. The chart along the lower margin features Hellespont, or Channel of the Dardanelles, Sea of Marmora, Constantinople and the Bosphorus Strait - extending from the Aegean to the Black Sea. In very good condition, joined at centerfold and lined. Lower left fold line split along inset map. Minor offsetting throughout.

William Home Lizars (1788--1859) was an engraver and painter based in Edinburgh. After the death of father, Daniel Lazars, he took up the family engraving business and expanded into etching and copperplate printing. This lovely map is a fine example of his work.
