London: Jonas Hanaway, 1753.

Map. Engraving. Image measures 17.5" x 19.5".

Detailed map of Central Asia centered between the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea ("Aral Lake" on the map, though both are technically lakes). Topography such as mountains, deserts, and cities, towns, and villages are depicted pictorially. Many cities and features are labeled, and notes provide detail throughout, marking "Mountains in which the Persians pretend are Gold Mines", "The Everlasting Fire", "Here Nadir Shah was killed" and more. The cartouche features three men, one on horseback, looking upon a man face down on the ground. More men on horseback bearing spears in the background suggest a battle scene, perhaps an account of the author's experience on his travels. This map was originally published in Jonas Hanway's "An Historical Account of the British Trade Over the Caspian Sea". In good condition, some offsetting and foxing, wear to edges at fold lines and stains lower margin.

Jonas Hanway (1712-1786) was an English writer, philanthropist, and merchant. He traveled through Russia, Persia, Germany, and the Netherlands, accounting his experiences. Back home in London he was known for his philanthropy, as well as his staunch opposition to tea drinking.
