Typed Letter Signed

Custer, SD: 1942.

Fine content T.L.S. 4to. 1 page, personal letterhead, Custer, South Dakota, November 11, 1942, in part: "...It is accepted that all good writers of today be sour, cynical, sardonic, somber, and sophisticated, but they, poor souls! Live in New York and have no religion - the latter, I think, being the consequence of the former. I could not live in New York and keep my religion, I'm sure, nor could I be happy unless I was drunk. Here however, I am actually happy, alone at sixty, and often sing and laugh in the woods, much to the perturbation of the deer and elk. That, no doubt, is naive, as my loftier literary brethren would say, but if they prefer the hair shirt of sophistication, they're welcome..." Excellent condition.

American Cowboy Poet who lived throughout the American West, and was named Poet Laureate of South Dakota in 1937. One of the most successful poems "A Border Affair" aka "Spanish is the Loving Tongue" was recorded by Bob Dylan and The Band as part of The Basement Tapes in 1969.
