The grizzly bear is also known as the North American brown bear. From J.J. Audubon's "Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America", published 1849-54. Right corner chipped but not affecting the image, otherwise in good condition. John James Audubon (1785-1851) was an American naturalist, painter and ornithologist known for his extensive field work studying birds and then painting them. By the late 1830's, he was planning a new book on the viviparous quadrupeds of North America. Audubon was assisted by many family members in this enterprise including his two sons, John Woodhouse and Victor Gifford.
