This fantastical print originally appeared in Montanus' "De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld" and was copied in facsimile by John Gavit in 1851. It depicts the fauna of the colony of New Netherland, showing a ferocious beaver, an elk or deer with a furry mane, and a large bird of prey sinking its talons into the backside of a unicorn. This image represents the mythological aspect of European "discovery" of the new world, showing the new colony in a imaginative way. Language: English
