Nurenberg: Homann Heirs.

Map. Original engraving with hand coloring. Nurenberg: Homann Heirs, circa 1740. Image measures 22 3/4" x 19 1/4"

Striking composite map of Spanish colonial America, made after Pierre-Francois-Xavier de Charlevoix's publication "Histoire de L'Isle Espanole ou de S. Domingue" and pertaining to the current state of the war, which in 1740 was waged between the English and the Spanish. Text in Latin reads "Map of the Islands of America and several mainland territories situated opposite these islands and around the Gulf of Mexico, drawn from a large number of separate maps, from the instructions of navigators and travelers, and from the accounts of Spanish historians who provide details not previously included on maps all coordinated with the most recent determinations and astronomical observations of longitude for Martinique, St. Domingue (Hispaniola), Jamaica, Cartagena, and Louisiana." Clockwise from the top right, the maps are as follows: "Delineatio munimenti et Portus S. Augustini", "Carte des Isles de L'Amerique et Deplusieurs Pays de Terre Ferme", "Ichnographia Urbis San-Domingo", "Urbs capitalis Regni Mexicani dicta Mexico", "Delineatio Portus Mexicani Vera Cruz", and a map of the Isthmus of Panama. In excellent condition with beautiful hand colored detail. Some archival tape repairs to margins at verso, and hinges from framing. Hard to find.

Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d' Anville (1697-1782) was a French geographer and cartographer whose accurate, research-based work raised the standards for 18th-century map-making. Passionate about maps from his childhood, he created maps during his school years and would go on to publish several atlases during his prolific career. In his early 20's he became the Geographer to the King of France. His accuracy and in depth research would make him one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century.

Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a renowned German mapmaker of the late 17th and early 18th century who served as geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor. His business was carried on through the 18th century by the Homann Heirs, also prolific and popular mapmakers.
