An Accurate Map of Hindostan or India from the best Authorities

Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1812.

Map. Engraving with original outline hand coloring. Images measures 15 1/2" x 15 3/4"

This map of India was published in the 1812 edition Carey's "General Atlas." The map extends from the region labeled as Cabul to the western coast of Siam, including Nepal, Tibet, Burma, Bhutan, and many island groups in the Island Ocean. Cities, towns, and regions are labeled. Shows detailed river systems, mountain ranges, and forested areas. Notations in script throughout describe the inhabitants of the region, or what is known to the Europeans. The map is in very good condition, with some minor foxing, stains, and offsetting - mostly affecting the margins. Some very small closed tears to left margin, with one archival tape repair.

Mathew Carey (1760-1839) was an Irish-born American publisher, bookseller, and economist, as well as one the most important figures of early American cartography. Carey was based in Philadelphia, where he apprenticed for Benjamin Franklin before establishing his own book shop and publishing firm. He is credited with publishing the first American atlases, producing some of the best quality maps and most informative depictions of the United States in the early period after it gained independence.
