A New Map of Upper & Lower Canada from the Latest Authorities

London: John Cary, 1808.

Double-page map. Engraving with original hand colored outline. Image measures 18" x 20 1/8"

Beautiful map of Canada and the Great Lakes region, extending from Lake Winnipeg to the St. Lawrence River, and to Hudson's Bay. Dated 1807 and published in 1808, the map reflects European interest in North American territories during a time of westward expansion, displacement of natives, and significant political and territorial changes. Rivers, forts, and major cities are labeled, including Niagara Falls. Indigenous tribes are indicated, and extensive notations throughout the map describe territorial boundaries, navigational routes, and topography. Mountains are forests are depicted pictorially. The map is in very good condition. Centerfold as issued. Published in the first edition of Cary's "New General Atlas", as plate 53 - indicated by manuscript.

John Cary (1754-1835) was a British cartographer and engraver. His highly detailed and accurate maps mark a turning point from the earlier emphasis on decoration toward a greater emphasis on information. The map was originally published in "Cary's New Universal Atlas."
