Beautiful map of China depicted in impressive detail. Includes the Korean Peninsula. Hand colored to show provinces, the map labels cities, towns, islands, and major rivers. Taiouan or I. Formosa is identified. Topography is rendered pictorially. The map is in very good condition, with minor toning along centerfold and some offsetting primarily in the East China Sea.
John Cary (1754-1835) was a British cartographer and engraver. His highly detailed and accurate maps mark a turning point from the earlier emphasis on decoration toward a greater emphasis on information. The map was originally published in "Cary's New Universal Atlas."
