The Colton family was a leading 19th-century American map and atlas publisher, founded by Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893) in New York City in 1831. Initially reissuing existing maps, Colton's firm quickly became known for high-quality guidebooks, railroad maps, and atlases. Their most notable works include "Colton's Atlas of the World" (1855) and "Colton's General Atlas" (1857), distinguished by detailed engravings and decorative borders. Joseph's sons, George and Charles, joined the business, helping it thrive despite financial setbacks. The firm continued publishing until 1901, leaving a lasting impact on American cartography.
