Turquie D'Asie; Al'Exception des Enclaves Situees en Arabie

Paris: Rigobert Bonne, 1788.

Map. Image measures 9 1/4" x 13 1/2"

This map of Turkey and the Middle East extends from Aegean Sea to Caspian Sea, and from Cairo to Crimea. Includes the present-day regions of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Armenia, Georgia, Dagestan, Kurdistan, Iraq, Iran, Cyprus, Crete, and some Greek islands. Major cities, rivers, regions, and topograhical features are labeled. Elevations rendered pictorially. The map is in very good condition with full margins.

Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He served as Hydrographer to France, and during his term, he produced a number of detailed and useful maps, particularly of coastal regions. His work is often devoid of decorative cartouches and compasses roses and marks a turn in European mapmaking away from decoration toward technical mapping. This edition is a re-issue of Guillaume Thomas Francois Raynal's atlas of 1773. Bonne's version is "Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre".
