British America on Mercators Projection
Edinburgh: A. & C. Black, 1854.
Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 16.5" x 22".
Lovely map of the upper regions of North America includes Canada, Alaska, and Greenland. The map is clearly labeled with city names and bodies of water, providing a comprehensive overview of this final frontier of world exploration. A large inset at the upper left show the territories of Wellington Straight explored by Captains Austin and Perry in 1851. A smaller inset next to it depicts "Beechey Island, site of Sir J. Franklin's winter quarters, 1845-1846." The map appeared in "Black's General Atlas Of The World." It is in excellent condition with no chips or tears. Minor foxing. Adam Black (1784 - 1874) was a Scottish publisher and politician who, with his brother Charles, founded the A & C Black publishing company. Together they published a wide range of materials, including atlases, medical books, and the 7th, 8th and 9th editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica. This map is a fine example of their work.
