A New Map of Italy, with the Islands of Sicily, Sardinia & Corsica.

London: Laurie & Whittle, 1794.

Map. Engraving with original hand outline. Image measures 23" x 19 3/4"

This incredible map of Italy extending from the Alps to the Mediterranean, including the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica. Part of the Dalmatian coast and northern Africa are also shown. The map highlights numerous cities, towns, and villages, with major post roads drawn and mountains depicted pictorially. Made after Thomas Kitchen's map by the same title for his 1760 "A General Atlas", it was later published by Robert Sayer and then Laurie & Whittle. Subsequent editions featured additional details such as post roads and other improvements, and thus proved more popular - executed by a variety of mapmakers including D'Anville. In very good condition condition, with some edgewear and a printed crease along the right margin and along the left centerfold. Otherwise clean and bright, with vibrant hand colored outline.

Robert Laurie (c. 1755 - 1836) and James Whittle (1757-1818) were London-based map and atlas publishers active in the late 18th and early 19th century. They formed their firm following the death of their employer Robert Sayer, who was an important English publisher of maps, portraits, and nautical engravings. Their firm combined Laurie's engraving skills with Whittle's social contacts and print sales experience. Together, they published numerous maps and atlases, often enlisting prominent cartographers such as Kitchin, Faden, Jefferys and others to update and modify their plates.

Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d' Anville (1697-1782) was a French geographer and cartographer whose accurate, research-based work raised the standards for 18th-century map-making. Passionate about maps from his childhood, he created maps during his school years and would go on to publish several atlases during his prolific career. In his early 20's he became the Geographer to the King of France. His accuracy and in depth research would make him one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century.
