Bound in is an autographed letter, signed, to Madame Morland. 31 lines, Margate, Jan. 1, 1786. He states his new years resolution, "to get up early and fall to painting" but has already broken it, "having breakfast at eleven and set down to dinner without shaving, washing my hands or face, and with a dirty shirt, dirty stockings...these are dirty beginnings for '86." He advises that he is sending some paintings to London. "Three of the frames are entirely spoiled by rubbing and the sea air" and reminds her to save the crates as they may be wanted.
