Carte de L'Egypt
Paris: Jean Lattre, 1771.
Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 17 1/4 x 12 1/2"
This map of Egypt is by one of the most significant French cartographers of the 18th century. Extending from Nile delta to Nubia and includes part of the Red Sea. Mountains are depicted pictorially and sand dunes with hachures. Provinces and Sheik domaines are noted. The title cartouche features the shallow rocky Nile known as 'Cataracts of the Nile' and a big crocodile surrounded by date palm trees. The map is in very good condition, with some light toning.
Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. He served as Hydrographer to France, and during his term, he produced a number of detailed and useful maps, particularly of coastal regions. His work is often devoid of decorative cartouches and compasses roses and marks a turn in European mapmaking away from decoration toward technical mapping.
