Paris: Didot, 1758.

Map. Copper plate engraving. Paris: Didot, 1758. Image measures 7 1/2" x 11 1/4"

Beautiful early map of the Chesapeake Bay, issued by French cartographer Nicolas Bellin for "L'Histoire Generales des Voyages." Extending from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean, and from Philadelphia to Norfolk, the map shows rivers, islets, sandbars, cities, towns, and major overland routes. Topography is beautifully rendered in pictorial detail, and scale notations are in French. The title is framed by a lovely rococo style cartouche. In excellent condition with very faint offsetting, and original fold lines as issued.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingenieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office).
