Beautiful early map of the Louisiana Territory, issued by French cartographer Nicolas Bellin for "L'Histoire Generales des Voyages." Centered on the Mississippi River, the map extends from New Mexico to the southern Atlantic coast, and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. Published during the French and Indian War, the map denotes many indigenous tribes, as well as French settlements and forts. Rivers, cities, and towns are labeled, with some notations referencing colonial settlement. Topography is beautifully rendered in pictorial detail, and scale notations are in French. The title is framed by a lovely rococo style cartouche. In excellent condition with very faint offsetting, and original fold lines as issued.
Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingenieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office). Binding: Unbound
