Flattened Out.; The last appearance of the too ambitious New York ring-master.
New York: Harper, 1887.
Print. Page measures 16" x 11.25".
This political cartoon depicts a flattened New York politician, James G. Blaine, on the ground beside an elephant labeled "G.O.P. N.Y.". A barrel nearby reads "Platt's Great Political Circus", referring to Thomas C. Platt's political machine and his role as the de facto leader of the New York Republican party in 1887. Following a democratic sweep at the 1887 New York State elections, Blaine, previously a contender for the 1888 Presidential nomination, lost hope of continuing and left for a trip to Europe with is family. Text on the verso points out that New York elections tend to be indicative of national politics, and that the Republican party needs a more popular candidate than Blaine for a chance to stay in power. Published on the front page of Harper's Weekly on November 19, 1887. Image in good condition, with chips to margins.
