This charming print of a Asiatic lion, from the Surry Zoological Gardens, appeared as Plate 3 in William Jardine's "Naturalist's Library", a collection of engravings depicting wildlife around the world. Engraved by William Lizars after an illustration by Edward Lear. In very good condition.
William Home Lizars (1788--1859) was an engraver and painter based in Edinburgh. After the death of his father, Daniel Lizars, he took up the family engraving business and expanded into etching and copperplate printing.
