Imperii Sinarum Nova Descriptio

Amsterdam: John Wolters.

Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 8 1/4" x 10 1/8"

This small map of eastern Asia was published circa 1697. The map extends from the island of Japan to a mythical Lake Kia, feeding five rivers flowing into southeast Asia. Mountains, deserts, and the Great Wall of China are depicted pictorially. A cartouche in the lower right features three figures, likely an Asian and Dutch merchant discussing trade. In excellent condition. A crisp, dark impression. Original fold line as issued, and minor creasing to lower right corner

An avid traveler and geographer, Philipp Cluver (1580-1623) was born in Gdansk, but spent most of his life in Leiden. His atlas "Introductio in Universam Geographiam" was originally published in 1624, and considered a standard for many years as evidenced by its numerous reissues.
