Michigan and the Great Lakes
Boston: Bradford, Thomas Gamaliel, 1835.
Map. Engraving with hand-colored outline. Image measures 7 7/8" x 10 1/8"
Early map of the Michigan territory published two years prior to statehood. The map extends to show the entire Great Lakes Region. Present-day Wisconsin and Minnesota are labeled as District of Huron, and Attached to Michigan Territory. Shows towns, waterways, railroads and topographical details. Relief is shown pictorially. Indian territory is indicated, including Ottawa and Chippewa nations inhabiting the Upper Peninsula and the northern part of the Lower Peninsula. These territories were ceded the following year (1836) with the Treaty of Washington. Early county divisions in southern Michigan are also delineated. The Toledo strip is shown as part of Michigan territory. This territorial dispute with Ohio was ongoing at the time of publication. This map is in very good condition, with minor foxing and toning to margins, not affecting the image.
T.G. Bradford (1802-1887) was a Boston based publisher. He worked as assistant editor of the American Encyclopedia before entering the field of map making.
