This beautiful 1643 map by Willem Blaeu depicts the Rio de la Plata region in South America, showing Paraguay, Uruguay, parts of Argentina and Brazil. The Andes mountain range in present-day Peru and Chile is elegantly rendered in pictorial detail. Indigenous groups are extensively noted along the Rio de la Plata. Rivers, towns, cities, lakes, and a host of additional topographic features are labeled. A sea monster lurks off the coast, and the cities of Rio de Jainero, Sao Paolo, Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Asuncion, Santiago, Mendoza, Potosi, and Cusco are identified. A decorative title cartouche adorns the upper right corner, a decorative compass rose is featured near the centerfold, and Blaeu's inscription is in the lower right with a cartouche featuring a globe. With beautiful original hand coloring. The map is in good condition with minor wear to margins. Original centerfold as issued.

One of the most prolific Dutch mapmakers of his time, Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) started one of the most famous map publishing firms of the 17th century. It was at this time that the Dutch controlled the map trade, and their ornate and beautiful maps had immense popularity. Blaeu and his family worked out of Amsterdam and was instrumental in driving this dominance in his lifetime, and this legacy was continued by his sons. This series was published by his son Johannes (c. 1599-1673), who took over the business upon his father's death.
