Mexico
New York: J.H. Colton, 1857.
Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 12" x 14 1/2"
This beautiful map was issued by J.H. Colton a few years after the Mexican-American War. The map includes Texas, Guatemala and other nearby regions. It features an inset featuring the Territory and Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the site of a proposed trans-continental canal similar to the Panama Canal. The canal was never built. Several cities, towns, canals, and topographic details are noted throughout the map, including "uninhabited" deserts and "isolated mountains without grass, wood or water..." The map is in good condition with overall toning. Spot to left margin, and minor chips and tears to edges, not affecting the image.
The Colton family was one the most prolific and successful publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. J.H. Colton (1800-1893) founded his business in NYC in 1831.
