Map. Engraving with hand color. Image measures 22" x 16.25"

This is a lovely 1764 map of Syria and Lebanon by Joseph Nicolas De l'Isle. Part of the Ottoman Empire at the time, the map extends from the Asia River in the south of modern day Turkey south as far as Sidon in modern Lebanon. Shows incredible detail with important cities and mountains depicted pictorially. Also notes towns, rivers, lakes, and other important features. Shows roads connecting important cities of the time, including Damascus, Hama, Serde, Tripoli, Aleppo, and others. The map is in good condition with minor wear and toning along the original fold lines.

Joseph-Nicolas De l'Isle (1688-1768) was a French astronomer and cartographer, younger brother to the renowned Geographer to the King, Guillaume De l'Isle. Elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1714, he worked at the Royal Observatory from 1719 to 1722 before traveling to Saint Petersburg in 1725 at the invitation of Tsar Peter the Great. Joining the Russian Academy, he participated in expeditions to Siberia, contributing to studies in astronomy, cartography, ethnography, and zoology.

In Russia, De l'Isle collaborated with Ivan Kirilov on an atlas of the Russian Empire, though their differing methodologies led to his dismissal from the project in 1740. The Atlas Rossicus, however, was later published under De l'Isle's name. Returning to France in 1747, he continued his cartographic work, often collaborating with his nephew-in-law, Philippe Buache. Together, they produced maps that incorporated De l'Isle's Russian discoveries and speculated on the geography of the Pacific Northwest of America.
