This scarce map of New York City was issued in 1855 as part of "Trow's New York City Directory." Extending south form 119th Street, it includes parts of Hoboken, Downtown Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Long Island City, and Astoria. Ward's Island (which would become part of Randal's Island) and Roosevelt Island (then Blackwells Island) are also included. Includes the city's street grid plan along with squares, parks, and railroad lines. Central Park is beautifully depicted. Ferry lines are also noted. Map is in good condition with some verso repair over damages along folds. Small verso restoration over loss near center fold line. A nice example of a New York City Map.
John Fowler Trow (1810 - 1886) was a printer and published in New York City. He was the one of the first to introduce electrotyping in the printing business. He is best known for publishing the annual "Trow's New York City Directory," which he began in 1852 and whose publication continued for several years after his death.
