G. Woolworth Colton's railroad, township & distance map of New England

New York: G.W. Colton & Co., 1860.

Pocket map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 39" x 29". 16mo brown cloth cover with title embossed in gold lettering.

This impressive railroad pocket map of New England was issued by G. W. Colton in 1860, a time when industrialization progressed rapidly, and people were increasing moving away from urban centers. Extending from Maine to New York City and Long Island, including Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and parts of New York State, Quebec, and New Brunswick, the map details the expanding railroad network, with every station identified. A table of distances showing the distance from many towns and cities to New York, Hartford, Providence, Boston, Montpellier, Concord, and Augusta is also included. An inset in the lower left quadrant features the Eastern Portion of Massachusetts including Boston and vicinity. Also notes towns, rivers, islands, roads, and other geographical features. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original fold lines, and verso reinforcements at several fold intersections.

The Colton family was one the most prolific and successful publishers of maps and atlases in the United States. Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893) founded his business in NYC in 1831.
