Unbound text gatherings and plates loose in wrappers as issued, protected in the original red cloth dropback boxes, held closed with imitation bone clasps. Rio de Janeiro & New York: Distribuidora Record / Continental News, 1965. A reprint of the original Paris edition of 1834-1839, this is a complete set of the facsimile edition -- Commemorative edition of the 4th centenary of the city of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro. Number 862 of 1000 numbered copies.

An extraordinary set of volumes, for the most part illustrations of the artist's experiences in Brazil from 1815 to 1831. Includes scenes of plantation life. Rather scarce as copies are often broken for the plates. The boxes are edgeworn, faded and dampstained but have done their job well as interior pages are pristine

The French painter Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848) went into exile in Brazil at the fall of Napoleon. During this long stay (1815-1831) Debret produced several hundred drawings and watercolors on daily life in Brazil. On his return to France, he published this picturesque and historical Voyage to Brazil with Firmin Didot (1834-1839). Forgotten for a century, then translated into Portuguese in 1944, this exceptional work has become for Brazil a founding iconographic and literary source since it was contemporary with the birth of the Brazilian Nation.
