This large polar map shows Antarctica as an icy sea before it had been discovered. Beautifully colored and careful detail of the surrounding geography. Stains and chips to margins. John Pinkerton (1758-1826) was a prominent English mapmaker known for his large and impeccably detailed maps. In this manner, his work marks a turning point from the earlier emphasis on decoration toward a greater emphasis on information. His "Modern Atlas" is one of the best British atlases of the period and is a fine example of his work. Rare American edition.
