A Roman Interior
1920.
Pencil and watercolor on board. Signed and dated in ink in the ower right. Image measures 11" x 9", board measures 19 7/8" x 15"
Striking architectural study depicting a cutaway view of a Roman interior. The perspective shows the corner of the room, with a mosaic tile floor enclosed by eight Ionic columns, with a lush landscape of trees and a hill in the background. Decorative details include a niche housing a large vase, and colorful patterned panels adorning the walls. A mural depicting a figure mounted on a hippocampus, a mythological creature also known as a sea-horse, is drawn above the columns. In excellent condition, with minor toning to the edge of the board, not affecting the image.
