Carte du District de Tranquebar / Caart des Regtsgebieds van Trankenbar

Amsterdam: 1756.

Uncolored engraving. Image measures 12" x 12 1/8"

Fascinating town plan of Tranquebar and its surrounds, known today as Tharangambadi in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The fortified town, depicted near the bottom of the map along the coast, was established in 1620 as a Danish trading post. In very good condition, with minor wear along original fold lines.

Jacobus van Schley (1715-1779) was a Dutch draughtsman, printmaker, and engraver. He studied under Bernard Picart, and produced many book illustrations and engraved portraits in the mid-18th century. This is a beautiful example of his work.
