Corso del Fiume dell Amazoni Descritto Dal P. Cosmografo Coronelli

1695.

Map. Engraving 13 x 19 3/4 inches.

Beautifully engraved map of the northern half of the South American continent. It describes the Amazon basin with Pacific, Caribbean and Atlantic coasts delineated, large armorial cartouche of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the dedicatee, surmounted by title within garland, scale of Italian miles within smaller decorative ribbon cartouche connected to a playful sea monster, topographical features of mountain ranges and water courses elegantly engraved, numerous depictions of indigenous peoples including settlements and farming activities, but mostly concentrating on their destructive practices of warfare, torture, execution and cannibalism. Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world's earliest geographic society, L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He was known best for his globes, which he made for prominent rulers such as Louis XIV and the Duke of Parma. This map is an excellent example of his work.
