Philadelphia: Thomas Desilver, 1832.

188 pages. Slim 8vo, original drab printed boards with newer brown leather spine. Philadelphia: Thomas Desilver, 1832. Second edition, enlarged and improved. A few discrete library stamps and foxing throughout still a very good copy.

A comprehensive treatment, and, according to Kelly and Burrage, among Bell's finest works. This book was believed to have contained "a fuller and more impartial digest of the medical practice of cholera ... from the first appearance of the diseases in Bengal in 1817, down to the present time, than any one work hitherto published." (Preface). Bell (1796-1872) and Condie (1796-1875) were both well-known practitioners in the Philadelphia area. The work shows considerable insight into principles of urban sanitation, and did much to stimulate interest in public health in the U.S.
