New Bridge, Macomb's Dam, NY Built in 1861

New York: D.T. Valentine, 1861.

View. Lithograph with original color. Image measures 6" x 8".

This beautiful small view features a depiction of the Macombs Dam across the Harlem River in New York City. The bridge, built in 1814, was a true dam built to power a gristmill along the Harlem River. In 1858, the bridge was demolished, following years of civilian complaints regarding limitations on navigability caused by the dam. The complaints culminated in acts of civil disobedience, with a force of 100 men led by Lewis G. Morris breaching the dam and removing parts of it in 1839. Their actions were upheld by the courts, who ruled that New York State did not have jurisdiction to authorize the bridge's construction, as navegable waterways were controlled by the Federal government. By 1861, the bridge and dam were completely removed, and temporarily replaced with the bridge pictured in this print. This bridge was eventually replaced in 1895 with the Macombs Dam Bridge, which continues to operate today.

This view was published in the 1862 edition of "Valentine's Manual", a directory of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York. In good condition. Some wear along folds. Tiny rips along edges of fold lines.

David Thomas Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years and began publishing the "Manual for the Corporation of the City of New York" in 1841. The Manuals were directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York that included facts about the City of New York, city history, city council information, and reported on the progress of public works such as Central Park. Popularly called Valentine's Manuals, the texts were richly illustrated with maps, lithographs, and engravings. This view provides a fascinating look at New York City.
